Emma Pillsbury’s clothes and Colour Psychology:Brown

When analyzing the colour brown in relation to Wemma it makes me very excited! Here’s why:

From the very first episode Will is dressed in brown and Emma in yellow and they are often framed together in these colours. Brown is the colour of earth. Yellow is the colour of the sun. The earth needs the sun to give it life and warmth. Therefore Emma is the light of Will’s life and without her nothing in his life will grow. No wonder he lost at Regionals last year! God I love this show.

It gets even better. The earth gives sustenance and stability to trees/plants giving them a fertile base from which to grow. If plants don’t get enough nutrients they wither and die so it should come as no surprise to see Wemma in these brown/green clothes in some very pivotal moments in Season 2; Emma is at her ‘sickest’ with anxiety/depression.

But back to brown. We may as well just put Will Schuester’s name under its definition:

It is solid and reliable and helps to create a neutral, comfortable and open atmosphere. It communicates credibility, security, strength, maturity, home and hearth. People who like brown are generally steady and reliable characters with a keen sense of responsibility and duty. They are "down to earth" types who make good friends and family life is of the utmost importance to them. Brown is friendly, approachable and values moderation. It is loyal and trustworthy and dependable in a practical and realistic way.
In color psychology, brown is honest, genuine and sincere. It relates to the hardworking, the industrious and reliable, with both feet planted firmly on the ground. It can be considered dull, boring and unexciting by many. Remember in Brittany/Britney when Will said ‘because the boring person I am wasn’t good enough for you’? (Yes it brought a tear to my eye too.)
It is sensual, sensitive and warm, engulfing one in a feeling of calmness and comfort. It is a practical and sensible color which implies common sense. It hides the dirt! (source: http://www.empower-yourself-with-color-psychology.com/color-brown.html)

Rocky Horror had to be one of Will’s most emotionally tumultuous weeks. He had Carl to frustrate and annoy him and Emma’s ‘Toucha Touch Touch Me to entice him. It’s no wonder he and Emma ended the episode in brown. It brings people back down to earth and suppresses the emotions, creating a safe haven from the stresses of the outside world within which problems can be contemplated and solved.

The color brown gives reassurance. It is quietly confident but never the life of the party! Brown does not seek attention - it prefers to stay in the background, allowing other colors around it to shine. (Remember Emma’s words to Will in this scene where she predicts his routine for Sectionals and reminds him to consider the other ‘stars’ that may not shine so bright?)

Certain shades of brown can look wistful

Brown prefers to function in its own safe little world - it is not carefree and spontaneous and doesn't like surprises (eg pearly white harbour sneak attacks). Light Brown: is friendly and approachable, sincere, honest and genuine.

Brown is comforting and stabilizing, while green is balancing and rejuvenating, just what we all need to help us deal with the stresses of modern life or a hangover! I love the double meaning of Emma’s dress: on one hand it is rejuvenating and on the other, it represents illness: she is ‘love sick’ and as she reaches out to touch Will’s cardigan in this scene we know she’s yearning to get back to ‘earth’.

Brown represents stability; it is reassuring, comforting, earthy and contained. Ideal for running to in an emergency and delivering bad news in!
Shades of brown:
Just before Emma comes running to his class room to tell him about Sue’s potential ‘sue-icide’ Will announces he’s ‘finally over Emma’, but his clothes tell a different story: dark brown is strong, yet sad and depressive.

Tan: is ageless and timeless, straightforward, uncomplicated and natural; 'Hey there sexy lady...'

Beige: is practical and reliable, conservative, constant, unchanging and loyal

Ivory: is calming, yet encouraging, with a reserved style of simple sophistication. This outfit is earthy, natural, kind, non-assertive and passive, which is why Emma had to throw in some orange when she went to confront Sue in ‘Grilled Cheesus’.
Effects of the colour brown:

Comforting: Sensual and warm, friendly and approachable, brown engulfs one in a feeling of calm and safety, perfect for counselling Rachel in!

Structure: It encourages orderliness and organization.

Protective: creates a safe haven of support for family and friends
Secure: Safe and protective - a refuge from the chaos of the outside world and a sense of belonging.

Now I want to know how many brown hued ties and jackets Will has. He's in too many scenes for me to be bothered trawling through every episode again to find out.
