Dear Emma Pillsbury

Since you moved in with Will, I’ve had a few nagging questions about your clothes.

Given the breadth of Will’s vest, jacket and tie collections how did you manage to find enough space in the wardrobe to fit all of your clothes?

Just as you helped Will organize his wardrobe, did he help you arrange yours? Did he stop you from throwing out the pea green coat because it was what you wore the first time he kissed you? (And why haven’t you worn it since?) Did he choose a special shelf for your shoes that he scraped the chewing gum off? And how about the blue and yellow cardigan you were wearing when he grabbed your arm and told you he loved you and you loved him, even though you wouldn’t admit it; does that sit next to the aqua sweater you were wearing when he told you he didn’t want to lose you and his own grey vest that you didn’t have the heart to throw away? The black cardigan and green shirt would have to be in there too. (Sorry if I’m making you blush at the memory of ripping Will’s shirt off.) Have you considered categorizing these items in your wardrobe under the Barbra Streisand song title ‘He Touched Me’?

How do you organize your wardrobe? Do you prefer to group colours together? Or do you prefer categorizing by item? Or do you go by most recent to oldest purchase? Although if you chose the last system, it could get tricky unless you have a memory for purchase dates; I imagine you’d have to either stick the receipt to the coat hanger or label sections of your wardrobe with the years.

How do you decide what to wear each day? Do you just go with how you feel when you wake up or do you decide the night before? Do you wait to see what Will is wearing and then choose something to compliment his colour scheme? Or does Will wait to see what you’re wearing and then choose a tie to compliment your clothes? Do you talk about it the night before? How did you manage to wear complimentary colours before you moved in together?

Do you have a favourite item of clothing? Does Will have a favourite outfit he likes to see you in? Do you have a favourite Will item of clothing?

Just how many nightdresses do you have? Do you go to sleep holding Will’s hand? (Sorry that last question had nothing to do with clothes). Just curious ‘cos we feel the love.

When I’m at home lounging around, I like to wear my velure track pants. What do you like to wear?

One last question: Have you thought about what you will wear when you tell Will you love him? Will the occasion require a new outfit? You could wear the pea green coat again. (On the other hand, If you just want to wear your birthday suit, I’m sure he won’t mind).

'I Love You Emma and You Love Me.'


‘I love you Emma and you love me’
‘If I really love you, I have to back off’
‘Hey there sexy lady’
‘I’m here for you’
‘I just don’t want to lose you’
‘All for you’
‘I love you’

Will has no trouble expressing his feelings and there is absolutely no doubt about his feelings for Emma. Emma, on the other hand, has been in a constant battle with her feelings for Will and only once has she revealed her innermost thoughts; Season 1, episode 13: ‘One blink from you and I would have been out the door’ and ‘I can’t look at you without feeling heartbroken’. What really grates is that Emma told Will she told Carl she ‘loved him back’ in Season 2’s ‘Special Education’ and she sat on Carl's lap and hugged him. I felt Will's pain. She could tell someone she didn’t really love that she loves him but she can’t tell the man she truly loves that she loves him! 



Thus far in Season 3, Emma’s facial expressions have conveyed all the deep seated love she feels for Will and we adore the looks she gives him but we REALLY, REALLY, REALLY need/want to hear the words ‘I love you’ come out of her mouth and see and hear Will’s response. I also want to see her sitting in Will’s lap. Here’s what I’d like to know from the Glee writers (and by the way Writers, you'll need a lot more than 0.9% of screen time to answer these:

1.    Why can’t we ever hear just some of the thoughts that are in Emma’s head?
2.    How is the medication making her feel?
3.    How is her behavioural therapy going?
4.    Is Will contributing to her therapy in any way?
5. Has Will been with her to see Dr Shane? ie a couple's therapy session.
6.    Has she spoken to Dr Shane about her avoidance of sex?
7.    Why can’t she say: “I love you” to Will?
8.    Is she entering the realm of ROCD? (Relationship Obsessive Compulsive Disorder)?
9.    Do Will and Emma discuss her OCD?
10.    Will has mentioned he wants to start a family. Has he broached the topic with Emma yet?
11.  How much space do Emma’s clothes take up in the wardrobe?
12. Does Will hold Emma’s hand when they go to sleep?
13. What's happened to the green coat she was wearing the first time they kissed?

Any other Wemma shippers out there with questions they want to add?

A rant: looking at Wemma from a mathematical perspective.

After a promising start to the season and a tantalizing ‘Fix you’ ending to episode 3, there was no further mention of Emma’s OCD. RIB let the Wemma shippers go hungry in episode 4 and then decided to drop nothing more than crumbs during episodes 5, 6, 7,8 and 9. Like hungry birds the shippers gobbled up these morsels, patiently waiting for a bigger serving each week, but the meaty stuff was left in the editing room or just ignored. The shippers, while not exactly starving remained unsatiated. Sure, RIB’s game has improved by having Emma appear in each episode alongside Will but that’s just it: she appears. RIB we need MEANINGFUL INTERACTION, CHARACTER EXPLORATION AND STORY TELLING. Patience is turning to anger. What has happened to the Will-centric story line?  What has happened to the ‘hot’ Wemma action Falchuck tried to pacify the shippers with at the end of last season? What has happened to ‘fixing’ Emma’s problem?

Let’s recap the morsels we’ve been dished up in the last six episodes:

Ep 4: Even though Figgins wanted to cut the school musical and Emma was one of the directors, she was nowhere to be found in this episode. Maybe she was with Dr Shane recovering from her parents’ visit.
Wemma screen time: 0 seconds.

Ep 5: Emma and Will sit side by side watching opening night of West Side Story. Will praises the production. Emma sits as close to him as possible without moving into his lap. They both look deeply moved by Rachel and Blaine singing ‘One Hand One Heart.’ Wemma screen time: 15 seconds.

Ep 6: In yet another yellow nightdress, Emma soothes Will’s frazzled soul after he sees Sue on the TV spouting lies and derogatory remarks about Burt Hummel and his election campaign. Emma’s gentle touch and words of reason ease Will’s tension and have him sighing with pleasure.
Wemma screen time: 17seconds.

Ep 7: Back at the lunch table with Coach Bieste, Will delivers Emma her drink and then shares a look of discomfort with her as Bieste reveals what they think are intimate details about Bieste’s relationship with Mr ‘Cooter’ Menkin.

On Election day, Wemma walk up to Bieste’s table and offer her their support as Sue blatantly flaunts her relationship with Cooter in front of Bieste. Interestingly it is Emma who puts a hand on Bieste’s arm and says, ‘You need to go tell him how you feel.’ This from someone, who to the best of our knowledge, has never told Will how she feels and who has never spoken the words ‘I love you’ within our earshot. The irony.
Wemma screen time: 1 min 25 seconds (but the focus was Bieste)

Ep 8: Emma sits beside Will at Sectionals. They both look a little stunned after the first choir’s performance/Emma jumps up in excitement with Rachel at the announcement of the winners/Will mouths ‘All for You’ as he accepts the winning trophy and looks at Emma from the stage/Emma, clapping, looks back at him with pride and adoration.
Wemma screen time: 11 seconds.

Will’s ‘All for you’ had so much more meaning if you’d read the missing scene from ‘New York’ in which Will asks Emma, ‘And how do people make up for those big mistakes? The ones that keep them from the thing they want the most?’ And Emma replies: ‘They have to work really hard to make up for it. Spend at least the whole summer focused on nothing but making things right.’ Therefore, Will saying ‘All for you’ and sealing it with a kiss means he has followed her advice and is totally committed to her and the success of their relationship.

Then there is the subtext of the songs. Ryan Murphy cleverly chose songs that worked on three different levels: they fitted the character development of Quinn and Mike in particular; they overall conveyed where New Directions are at as a group; and thirdly, as we know Will chooses songs that convey his feelings towards Emma and this time around was no exception. ‘ABC’ by The Jackson 5 is all about how easy love can be if you’re with the right person and the snippets we’ve had of Wemma show their easy rapport with each other. The lyrics, ‘You went to school to learn girl, things you never knew before…now I’m going to teach you all about love dear…’ suggesting that Will wants to show Emma what real love is and what the power of love can achieve. The second song in the medley was ‘Control’ by Janet Jackson. Emma used the word ‘control’ in ‘The Power of Madonna’ when, in the lead up to asking Will to ‘do the nasty’ she says, ‘I need to take control of my body’ and in ‘Rumours’ she says to Will, ‘You inspired me to take charge of my own destiny…’ OCD has controlled Emma’s whole life and she is finally only now getting some control over it. Having met Emma’s parents we realize how pertinent these lyrics are: ‘Did what my father said, and let my mother mold me.’ The following lyrics, ‘First time I fell in love, I didn't know what hit me, So young and so naive, I thought it would be easy’ could be a reference to Emma’s smitten stage of being in love with Will and how quickly she cooled things off between them when things got complicated. Finally Emma has reached a place where ‘Now I know I got to take control, Now I'm all grown up,I wanna be the one in control’. The song is like a mini story of Emma’s character development. New Directions ends with Michael Jackson’s ‘Man in the Mirror’, which is all about changing yourself to make the world a better place. Will and Emma have changed themselves for each other to make their world together a better place.

Ep 9: Emma pushes Artie’s wheelchair into the homeless shelter. Will’s arm is protectively around her. She takes his coat as he prepares to play the piano. Emma sits next to him on the piano stool and sings along to ‘Feed the World’. Will looks adoringly at her.
Wemma screen time: 6 seconds.

In sum, each of these scenes, short and sweet, are filled with shared looks of mutual understanding and adoration, Will’s protective arm around Emma and Emma’s physical closeness to Will. It appears that Wemma are so connected they have become telepathic and don’t need to talk!
Total Wemma Screen Time: 2 minute 14 seconds.

Now let’s say eps 4-9 are on average 40 minutes long. Six times forty equals 240 minutes and Wemma have been given 2 minutes and 24 seconds of that screen time. Therefore Wemma have been given 0.9% screen time. Within that screen time can we say there’s been any Wemma development? NO! Any meaningful discussion? NO! Any more movement to remedying Emma’s OCD? NO! Because 0.9% screen time is not long enough to do anything in.

So now RIB keep us hanging on a thread, dangling episode 10 in front of us with promises of a proposal. This shipper doesn’t like to be pessimistic but my greatest fear is that after the proposal there will be a further six episodes of 0.9% Wemma development until the wedding. Where is the Glee in that?

Let's hope the proposal, the wedding and the Wemma sexy times are so far out of this world that it takes the Wemma shippers a week or more to come back down to earth after viewing. More importantly they'd  better be given more than 0.9% screen time.

Emma Pillsbury’s clothes and Colour Psychology:White

There is probably barely an episode in which Emma isn’t wearing a white or cream shirt or top. White sits under her colourful cardigans, white bows (symbolizing her chastity and repressed emotions) hang off a top or pop out from underneath a jacket, white trims the  vibrant colours or acts as a base.

White sums up Emma: a clean, virginal, ‘innocent dove’. That’s a no-brainer, so let’s talk angels because angels wear white and they’re made of pure love. 






The low camera angle and lighting in these four shots present Emma as angel-like. Her eyes are looking down upon Will in each shot as though she’s watching over him, protecting him, like a guardian angel. In the Madonna shot (although dressed in red, white and black) she materializes, framed in a halo of white light behind her. Emma descends the stairs like the Virgin Madonna descending from the heavens further evoking an angel-like presence.


More angel references appear in ‘Vitamin D’. Will and Emma judge the girls singing the mash up of ‘Halo/Walking on Sunshine’. Emma is sitting there in her ‘angel’ like top next to Will while Rachel is singing the lyrics that reflect exactly what Emma means to him - ‘I found a way to let you in/But I never really had a doubt/Standing in the light of your halo/I got my angel now/It's like I've been awakened/Every rule I had you breakin'/It's the risk that I'm takin'/I ain't never gonna shut you out’ And then of course there is Walking on Sunshine, which gets back to what I said in the yellow/brown/blue posts.


In these scenes from ‘Sectionals’,




Emma in true guardian angel-like behaviour is Will’s protector and saviour, putting off her own wedding so she can take the kids to Sectionals for him. This act of saving him and the club is followed up in the same episode, by trying to maintain peace amongst the New Directions members: first Mercedes and Rachel, then Finn and Puck.


Before 'Sectionals' comes to a close Will finally decides his 'life would suck' without Emma and off he runs to catch his 'angel'. There she stands in a pool of light at the end of the dim corridor; she's even wearing a 'halo' (white beret). 

Will runs along the dim, colourless corridor to Emma and once he reaches her, he too is bathed in the light that surrounds her. Most significant is the beam of light that rests on his chest, over his heart. His heart has been touched/opened by her 'divine' power. You could argue that they even form a kind of heart shape together with both their bodies and the space between their bodies. 



Here we have the wedding dresses. The first one is as Emma explains to Will, reminiscent of Princess Diana’s dress. Marrying a prince is fairytale-like and Will did call her  Cinderella in the first episode. Will is her prince, no wonder she was keen to wear it for him. Then we have the second dress that is so much better, but that’s not what I’m here to talk about it. It’s Will’s blue shirt that needs discussion. If you’ve read the ‘blue’ post, you’ll remember that blue represents sky and here we have angel Emma ‘floating’ in the sky! She looks gorgeous and he is totally mesmerized by her, as anyone would be should they be able to hold on to an angel!



White is a color of protection and encouragement, offering a sense of peace and calm, comfort and hope, helping alleviate emotional upsets. It creates a sense of order and efficiency, a great help if you need to de-clutter your life of ex-wives and boyfriends who don’t know themselves!
 In Britney/Brittany, Emma’s gentle words of wisdom provide Will with some food for thought.

Too much white can cause feelings of isolation and emptiness; it can be too pristine and immaculate, making you feel as though you can't make a move for fear of upsetting it or creating a mess. 




In these two scenes Emma is still ‘looking after’ Will, (helping him with Rocky Horror and caring about his emotional state at Christmas time but she has become Will’s ‘untouchable’ angel’.



At the end of Vitamin D, Emma walks out of the light towards Will to offer him an opportunity which he doesn’t take and she returns to the light. Her white shirt not only represents her celestial origins, it also represents a clean slate; In color psychology white is the color of new beginnings, a clean slate, a blank canvas waiting to be written upon. While white isn't stimulating to the senses, it opens the way for the creation of anything the mind can conceive.









Emma Pillsbury’s clothes and Colour Psychology:Blue


I can’t analyze the colour blue without incorporating Will. Like brown, he wears blue constantly, especially when he’s with Emma.
As Juliet was the ‘sun’ for Romeo, Emma is the ‘sun’ for Will and he is her sky in which to sit. A blue sky represents peace and freedom and this is how Will makes her feel; free from loneliness and anxiety. The sun sitting in a cloudless blue sky is uplifting, suggests limitless possibility and is, like Wemma, PERFECT.

Moving on from the sky and sun metaphors…
Blue represents: trust, honesty, loyalty, sincerity, peace, quiet, wisdom, devotion, the helper, the rescuer, the friend in need, one to one communication, truth, authority, predictability, orderliness, non threatening. 
For God's sake Emma, don't walk away. Didn't you notice the meaning of the blue scarf?

Blue has a need for order and direction in its life, including its living and work spaces. Blue hates confrontation and likes to do things in its own way. Blue seeks peace and tranquility above everything else, promoting both physical and mental relaxation. Blue is a giver, not a taker. It likes to build strong trusting relationships and becomes deeply hurt if that trust is betrayed.



Blue is persistent and determined to succeed in whichever endeavors it pursues. Change is difficult for blue. It is inflexible and when faced with a new or different idea, it considers it, analyzes it, thinks it over slowly and then tries to make it fit its own acceptable version of reality.


Blue is nostalgic. It is a color that lives in the past, relating everything in the present and the future to experiences in the past. 





Affect: reduces stress, creating a sense of calmness, relaxation and order. Blue relates to one-to-one communication, especially communication using the voice - speaking the truth through verbal self-expression - it is the teacher, the public speaker. The color blue is idealistic, enhancing self-expression and our ability to communicate our needs and wants. It inspires higher ideals.

Pale Blue: Pale blue inspires creativity and the freedom to break free.

Wanting to break free from Sue but also looking for an escape from fearing intimacy with Will.


Sky Blue: One of the calmest colors, sky blue inspires selfless love and fidelity. It is non-threatening and promotes a helpful nature that can overcome all obstacles. It is the universal healer.



Dark Blue: Dark blue is the color of conservatism and responsibility. Although it appears to be cool, calm and collected, it is the color of the non-emotional worrier with repressed feelings, the pessimist and the hypocrite. Dark blue can be compassionate but has trouble showing it as its emotions run deep. Dark blue is a serious masculine color representing knowledge, power, and integrity.
