It’s strange; Emma wears so many colours but when I think of her, the first colour that springs to mind is green. Maybe it's the green grapes or maybe it's because she’s wearing green at so many pivotal moments in her story arc:
Season 1.
1. The green bracelet when she gives Will some ‘guidance’ in the Pilot.
2. The ‘Chalk on the Nose’ scene in Showmance where they both feel the chemistry between them.
3. Emma not wanting to be ‘All By Myself’.
4. Rejecting another date from Ken. He retaliates by wiping his saliva on her car door handle.
5. Ken confronting Emma about her ‘fooling around’ with a married man which results in Emma agreeing to go to Tulipalooza with Ken.
6. Getting vomited on, courtesy of Kurt, in ‘The Rhodes Not Taken’. In her next scene she confronts Will about April.
7. Giving Will some marital advice in ‘Mattress’. Before we know it she's ditching her own wedding.
8. Their first kiss.
9. Confronting Sue about why Madonna isn’t being broadcast in her office. Sue explains to her, 'You don't deserve the power of Madonna...simply put you have all the sex appeal of one of those pandas at the zoo who refuses to mate.' This gets Emma thinking and we all know what happens next: Emma the minx is born albeit briefly.
Season 2.
10. I hate this coat because in it was wrapped devastating news for Will.
11. Christmas time
12. Amused by Will’s hung over state in ‘Blame it on the Alcohol’.
13. The ‘Drunk Dial’ scene from ‘Blame it on the Alcohol’.
14. The ‘Carl’s Gone/I’m here for you’ scene in ‘Night of Neglect’.
15. ‘The Vest’ scene in ‘Funeral’.
Season 3
16. Taking on a new role as Director of the school musical.
17. Glitter bombing Sue.
18. Suffering a relapse after a visit from her ginger supremacist parents.
Can you see the pattern? Emma wears green every time there is going to be a change in her life. So it should come as no surprise to know that green in relationship to Emma symbolises:
life, renewal, rebirth, hope, inexperience, balance and harmony, rejuvenation of mental, emotional and physical energies, equilibrium between head and heart, stability and endurance, giving us persistence and the strength to cope with adversity.
According to http://www.empower-yourself-with-color-psychology.com/meaning-of-colors.html:
People who like green are usually balanced and stable individuals, they have high moral values and tend to do the right thing. The color green is an emotionally positive color, giving us the ability to love and nurture ourselves and others unconditionally.
Green loves to observe. It relates to the counselor, the good listener, the social worker.
Being a combination of yellow and blue, the color green encompasses the mental clarity and optimism of yellow with the emotional calm and insight of blue, inspiring hope and a generosity of spirit.
Green has a strong sense of right or wrong, inviting good judgment. It sees both sides of the equation, weighs them up, and then usually takes the moral stand in making appropriate decisions. On the negative side, green can be judgmental and over-cautious.
Variations of the Color Green
Pale green: As the color of new growth on plants, it indicates immaturity, youthfulness and inexperience. It allows us to see things from a new perspective, to make a fresh start.
Emerald green: This is an inspiring and uplifting color suggesting abundance and wealth in all its forms, from material wellbeing, to emotional wellbeing to creative ideas.
Jade green: The color of trust and confidentiality, tact and diplomacy, jade green indicates a generosity of spirit, giving without expecting anything in return. It increases worldly wisdom and understanding, assisting in the search for enlightenment.
Lime green: Lime green inspires youthfulness, naivety and playfulness; It creates a feeling of anticipation, and helps to clear the mind of negativity.
Dark green: There is a degree of resentment in dark green. Often used by wealthy businessmen, ambitious and always striving for more wealth, dark green signifies greed and selfish desire.
When I watched the Christmas episode in Season 2 I was really curious about why Emma was dressed in olive green and not a more cheerful green. Here's what psychologists have to say about Olive green: Although the traditional color for peace, 'offering an olive branch', the color olive suggests deceit and treachery, blaming others for its problems. However there is also a strength of character with it that can overcome adversity to develop an understanding and caring of the feelings of others. Emma steps into the Christmas episode looking for Will wondering of he's 'ok, because we haven't really talked about it.' She wants them both to be at peace with her marriage to Carl (yes, she'd deluded). Could Emma have been sensing that deep down she was deceiving herself and Will? Emma wears olive green at her most emotionally distraught moments indicating she is looking for the inner strength to help her cope.
