Emma Pillsbury’s clothes and Colour Psychology: Turquoise/Aqua

Emma spends a lot of time in these colours that fall somewhere between green and blue. They are the colours of choice when Emma is dating Ken, dealing with feelings for Will and when she dates/marries Carl. So what does this mean? Read on.

Turquoise: controls and heals the emotions creating emotional balance and stability; recharges our spirits during times of mental stress and tiredness; alleviates feelings of loneliness; opens communication from and between the heart and the spoken word. Sounds like medicine specifically designed for Emma doesn’t it? On the negative side, turquoise relates to being either over-emotional or non-emotional, lacking communication skills, being reticent and deceptive. That’s our Emma.
Turquoise radiates the peace, calm and tranquility of blue and the balance and growth of green with the uplifting energy of yellow. It is the color of the evolved soul; is there at times a little irony in Emma wearing this colour?
Variations of the Color Turquoise
Aqua: Closer to green than blue, aqua is refreshing and uplifting. It is creative and light-hearted, yet strong and individual; calms the spirit, offering protection and healing for the emotions; compassion and self-sufficiency.
Aquamarine: calms and balances the mind and the emotions.
Teal: A more sophisticated version of turquoise, teal signifies trustworthiness and reliability. It promotes spiritual advancement and commitment.
Conclusion: Emma wears turquoise/aqua/teal when she needs a calming influence and in season 1 and 2 that is frequently. The relationships she forms with Will, Ken and Carl create great stress to her as she constantly battles with her pragmatic and practical head offering escape routes from her heart filled with overwhelming emotions for Will.
So let’s take a look:
Emma's fraught emotions need all the help they can get when she reluctantly agrees to date Ken. Maybe apart from the sweater, she put a little something into her drink bottle.

Emma ups the strength of her turquoise when she nervously asks Will for dance lessons in preparation for her wedding.

After ‘I Could Have Danced All Night’ Emma's feeling down and unsettled. She knows Will has feelings for her but can’t act on them.

After 'Mash Up' Emma’s back to hardly suppressing her feelings for Will. She let’s slip that if they were to rank crush-worthy teachers he’d be '#1 with a bullet'.  She's not wrong. She then composes herself and gives him advise about his woes with Rachel.

As the wedding date approaches Emma passes into the realm of teal in an attempt to calm herself down. Here she realises her wedding date is the same day as Sectionals. What's the dilemma? She really only wants to go to one of them and we know where her commitment lies.
After her date with Will in ‘Hello’ left her all discombobulated, Emma chose this top to wear in ‘The Power of Madonna.’ ‘We could be a girl saving team.’ Emma loves the idea of teaming up with Will in more ways than one.

Apparently turquoise is a good colour to have around you in an emergency – it promotes clear thinking. Luckily Emma decides to wear it for ‘Grilled Cheesus’ and ‘Comeback’. And who does she run to every time there’s an emergency? You know it. Is she trying to calm Will or herself?

In ‘Special Education’ I’m not sure full body aqua is enough to calm Emma’s nerves. She may have had to have taken some of Sandy’s medicinal marijuana behind the shelter shed or a sedative. The least she could have done was given Will some after she dropped her bombshell. The shippers were shocked but her outfit was telling a different story to the words coming out of her mouth.

Will has been keeping his distance. Look what colour Emma is in. Despite her marriage to Carl and telling Carl she ‘loved’ him, her inner turmoil over Will continues unabated.

Emma wears the same coloured cardigan for starting and ending her marriage to Carl. I like the symbolism. She’s ‘confused’. We’re not.
Courage + Calmness = OCD confrontation

With the help of her aqua top Emma remains light hearted, compassionate, strong and calm as she tells Will he must follow his dream and take the opportunity April is offering him.
Phew, that was a lot of aqua/turquoise. In Season 1 and 2 she lived in a constant state of anxiety. No sign of it as yet in Season 3. So ends our little analysis of Ms P and the colours she wears that fall somewhere between blue and green.
